LANCASHIRE REMEMBERS Festival of Remembrance
In 2018, a fairly unique situation occurred wherein both Armistice Day and Remembrance Sunday fell on the same day. This provided an opportunity to mark both Remembrance Sunday 2018 and the Centenary of the end of the Great War with one combined event.
East Lancashire Concert Band were formerly the Accrington Old Band who, on the last Saturday of September 1914, led the parade of the newly formed 11th (Service) Battalion East Lancashire Regiment – “The Accrington Pals”. Working with Hyndburn Council’s Accrington PALS Centenary Commemoration Group and other IWM World War One Partnership members they have remembered the Pals with a number of musical events. These include concerts to mark the 1914 recruitment of the Battalion as well as the loss of so many men at the Battle of the Somme on 1st July 1916.
In collaboration with the Royal British Legion, they led the biggest of these events at Preston Guildhall in front of an audience of over 1100.
The vision of the event was modeled on the annual Festival of Remembrance held in London’s Royal Albert Hall, with marching bands, local artists, cadets and other interest groups and finishing with a Service of Remembrance. It was broadcast by BBC Radio Lancashire and streamed on Youtube by University of Central Lancashire film unit.

MUSEUMS AT NIGHT This event was to "showcase" the library's extensive WW1 and "Accrington Pals" collection' Attendance was higher than expected and extra chairs had to be provided for visitors who wanted to listen to the band.(A good indicator of a popular event!) Conducted by Steve Taylor, the "Pals" March (composed for piano in 1914 by Ralph Sanders and arranged specially for our band by Nick Bonneville), was played "live" to an audience for the first time ever. What more fitting venue could there be to bring this fascinating piece of history to life? See the "Photos & Features" page for more information on "Pals March" |
Also featured in the programme was "Roses Of Picardy".
This 1916 ballad by Frederick Weatherly was set to music by Haydn Wood. Most evocative of the era! (Click below to hear the rendition "on the night".) |

TITANIC - A Night to Remember
On this night exactly 100 years ago, the TITANIC met her fate during her maiden voyage. This concert was to commemorate that event and to pay tribute to the musicians whose playing helped calm the passengers whilst the great ship was sinking.
